Alaskan mom Jackie Lea uprooted her entire life to take care of her 22-year-old son, Brandon, in Phoenix, Arizona. Brandon was in a devastating longboarding accident.
He lost control while traveling downhill and crashed into the pavement headfirst. The injuries did not have an optimistic outlook.
"The prognosis was very bleak, that he would be in a vegetative state for the rest of his life and that he would be brain dead," the mom said.
Jackie, as any mother would, flew down to Phoenix to be with Brandon and hasn't left his side. Fortunately, doctors were wrong. Brandon is making a ton of progress and is undergoing physical therapy to walk again.
The mother keeps Brandon's progress updated on her Facebook page. Another mom, Rebecca Gonzales, saw Jackie's Facebook posts. She instantly knew that although Jackie was a stranger, she wanted to help.
Rebecca brought Jackie food, clothing, and whatever else she needed for Brandon.
"She left her whole life back there and for her to be over here without family and support, it felt like we could give her that support that she needed," Rebecca said.
Rebecca wanted to do more. She reached out to CBS 5's "Pay it Forward" segment. The news station surprised Jackie at the hospital with $500.
"Having strangers come forward makes such a huge difference," Jackie said. "Seeing Brandon walk, knowing he's making those steps toward progress and healing — it's awesome."
