High-School Student Fights Sexism With Slick Yearbook Quote

Chloe Cross, a graduate from San Mateo High School in California, found a clever way to fight against school dress codes that are known to discriminate against females.

She posted her yearbook photo on her Instagram page with an unusual senior quote: "I would just like to apologize to those who were unable to graduate with the class of 2015 because they were too distracted by my midriff and consequently failed all of their classes! Xoxo.”

Often, school dress codes prevent girls from wearing skirts shorter than fingertip length or tank tops and shirts that bare the stomach. During prom season, many female students also have to comply with strict dress codes. One girl was even suspended for her dress, while others have gotten kicked out of the prom.

The fear is that this type of dressing is a distraction for the boys.

“I wanted to emphasize how stupid it sounds to blame the way that people, especially girls, dress for the academic failure of their peers. Nobody from my class would be going to college if bodies were as distracting as the administration makes them out to be,” Cross told Yahoo Canada in an interview.

Cross also pointed out that certain girls — the ones with long legs and large busts — are more often ridiculed for their fashion choices.
