Let’s say, hypothetically, you woke up one morning and could no longer apply your own makeup. Would it matter? How would your routine change? Would you still feel confident and beautiful?
These are the questions explored in a new Swedish Dove campaign, which interviewed three incredible, legally blind women about beauty. It’s moving to hear them discuss things they love about themselves, things they wish were different, and the way they perceive their own outward appearances. It’s a powerful reflection on our perceptions of what “beauty” even is. What would you consider beautiful if you were without your sight?
One woman who has only been able to see for a fraction of her lifetime discloses that, after she became blind, her automatic response while preparing herself for her day was to continue checking her reflection in the mirror — a reflection she wasn’t able to see. She now feels that’s one of the benefits of living without sight; she’s no longer a prisoner to her own criticisms of her own beauty, which still radiates whether she can see or not. She describes feeling beautiful now on days that she’s happy. And shouldn’t we all?
