When Tammy Chapman heard about three children living in an unfit home, she knew she had to intervene. Tammy fought tirelessly for custody of 12-year-old twins Kaden and Kylie, as well as their 10-year-old brother Kegan.
The 38-year-old went from living on her own to becoming a single mom. Needless to say, raising three kids was a great deal of extra work. Fortunately, her neighbors were taking note of the hardworking mother.
Six different members of her community secretly nominated Tammy for Build Portage, an organization in the Wisconsin community that completely renovates homes.
"This was definitely not a let's see what I can get out of this situation. It's shocking. Definitely feeling blessed," Tammy said. "The community is really stepping up."
Tammy couldn't believe that so many people nominated her, or that so many total strangers were donating money and time to help her. The volunteers plan on constructing a patio with a roof, as well as remodeling the kitchen, bedrooms, dining room, and bathroom. The home will be re-roofed and re-painted.
“The goal of this project is to help make Tammy’s small home more functional and to return the kindness that she has shown so many,” said Jared Pierson, Build Portage's director.
Any leftover money will be divided into three separate college funds for the kids.
