Flashback To Tammy Wynette’s Memorable Performance Of ‘Stand By Your Man’

Most famous singers have that one song that changed the course of their careers forever. For country legend Tammy Wynette, that song was "Stand By Your Man."

The 1968 recording not only sold millions, it also earned the late country star a Grammy Award.

However, it was also met with much controversy. The message of standing by a man no matter what was frowned upon by many listeners.

"What she said is, 'It's unbelievable to me that a song that took me 20 minutes to write, I've spent 20 or 30 years defending,'" Wynette's publicist and friend Evelyn Shriver told NPR in a 2000 interview.

Shriver added: "She said, 'The women I knew — my mother, my grandmother, my aunts — they stood by their man.' And she said, 'Nowhere does it say be a doormat and let this man walk on you.'"

Regardless of what naysayers had to say, the song remains a timeless classic. And performances like the one below prove that Wynette certainly stood by her song. Right before belting the tune onstage that day, she told the crowd, "I've been accused, among other things, of doing most of my writing for you ladies, but I did write a song special for you guys. Don't go away feeling slighted."
