Bellefonte Area Middle School science teacher Jim Nye regularly grows out his hair to raise money for different charities. He likes to dye his hair different colors to raise awareness for certain causes, and generally likes to use his appearance as a way to communicate what's important to him.
He started growing out his hair in October 2015, and hadn't cut it since. That's quite a long time to go without a trim!
One of his fellow staff members, Kim Van Buskirk, the school’s counseling secretary and student council co-adviser, then made it her mission to get his hair cut.
The teacher agreed to it, but he said that he would only change his appearance if it would support a good cause. He chose to raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund. The money would help support children and families affected by childhood cancer.
In front of the eighth-grade class and his colleagues, he had his bushy beard and thick, curly hair chopped off, trimmed, and styled in the school gymnasium. The students and faculty members who raised the most money for the fund were even able to participate in the makeover.
After all the hair was gone, Jim looked like a totally different person!
