Loretta Lynch has been appointed as the United States Attorney General — and she might be even worse than the old one.
In a last-ditch effort to block Lynch's confirmation, Senator Ted Cruz made an impassioned speech, but in the end his words fell on deaf ears. The Senate ended up approving her in a 56–43 vote. Ten Republicans ignored Cruz's advice and went ahead with her nomination.
The 10 Republicans who voted Lynch in were:
- Kelly Ayotte (NH)
- Thad Cochran (MI)
- Susan Collins (ME)
- Jeff Flake (AZ)
- Lindsey Graham (SC)
- Orrin Hatch (UT)
- Ron Johnson (WI)
- Mark Kirk (IL)
- Rob Portman (OH)
- Mitch McConnell (KY)
Cruz, who is running for president, argued that Lynch will actually end up being worse than the former Attorney General, Eric Holder. Cruz said that she will continue the disrespect to the Constitution, to Congress, and to the people of the United States.
The junior senator continued that the Attorney General has essentially been taken over by corrupt officials: "The Attorney General has systematically refused to do anything to seriously investigate or prosecute the IRS targeting citizens for expressing their first amendment rights…instead she (Lynch) chose to embrace the lawlessness of the Holder justice department."
Cruz's desperate plea to the Senate included one dire warning: "Eric Holder began disregarding the Constitution laws after he was confirmed as Attorney General. Miss Lynch has told the Senate that's what she's going to do."
Hopefully Cruz was wrong in his views on the new Attorney General, but it seems only time will tell where this new nomination will lead the American people.
