Illinois Teen Dies Following Collapse At Choir Rehearsal: ‘Nothing Was Wrong With Him’

A tragedy occurred on October 14, 2022. A hopeful teen was practicing his big solo when he collapsed. He would later be declared dead at the hospital.

Senior Daniel Moshi, age 17, was rehearsing at Naperville North High School with the All-State Honors Show Choir for the Illinois American Choral Directors Association. It was there he collapsed while singing. Bystanders attempted to perform CPR, and medical emergency personnel were called.

Loden Moshi, Daniel’s father, spoke to NBC Chicago about the tragedy: “I got the call from his teacher, musical teacher. And she said there’s an incident.”

Moshi went on to say, “He was singing his solo rehearsal and he collapsed. And now they’ve given him CPR and taken him to the hospital.”

Naperville officials confirmed that they received reports of an unconscious teen at the high school. They responded at 6:18 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, CPR was being performed by witnesses to the collapse.

Emergency medical personnel transferred Daniel to Edwards Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Daniel had planned to go on to college and dreamed of performing on Broadway.

Karolin Moshi, Daniel’s mother, did not see any signs of this tragedy coming. She also spoke to NBC Chicago: “Actually, I stopped by Starbucks right over here, where he grabbed his macchiato drink and his sandwich. I dropped him off. And he was waiting for his teacher to come, you know, come up and pick him up with his other students that were attending this choir show.”

Daniel’s cause of death is still being investigated at this time and has not been released. Karolin Moshi said, “We came home Saturday morning, I received a call from the DuPage coroner’s office and she said, ‘Miss Moshi, I’m reaching out to you to let you know that there was nothing wrong with your son. His organs were all healthy, his heart — absolutely nothing wrong with him.”

Daniel’s family remember him as being “honest, so pure, lovable.” They are struggling with this loss. “It’s hard. It’s not easy. You can see my eyes. I’ve been crying,” Karolin Moshi said.

Daniel’s sister, Dayna, had this to say about her big brother: “He was amazing. And I feel like people should know that more … If people have siblings, you need to have fun with them. Because if one of them goes away, you feel alone.”
