Doctors always tell us that exercising and generally taking care of our health is important. It helps us feel good, both physically and emotionally, and even helps boost mental function! Many kids like 15-year-old Elizabeth Schiller play sports just for fun or because they love running around, but now the teen is discovering just how being fit may have saved her life.
Elizabeth got her flu shot but came down with the flu anyway. Her symptoms started off as the typical ones you see in someone suffering from the illness, such as chest pain. But her symptoms continued to get worse and worse.
Her parents brought her to the emergency room, and just hours later she was flown to a different hospital where a pediatric intensivist would oversee her treatment.
Her strain of her flu was so bad, doctors had to put her in a coma to prevent her body from getting stressed.
But after 40 days in the hospital, her condition had improved enough for doctors to bring her out of the coma. Brought from the brink of death, the teen credits her strong runner's lungs for saving her life.
She says that if she were a couch potato, she surely would not have survived!
Doctors are marveled by this teen's resilience, but what's important is that she made it out of the hospital and is alive! They encourage anyone who can to get a flu shot.
