In March of 1999, Chrissy Steltz and her boyfriend were hosting a house party when a guest found a stolen shotgun under the couch. No one thought the gun was actually loaded, but it went off — and the bullets pierced through Chrissy's face.
Incredibly, Chrissy survived but two-thirds of her face were gone. Upon waking up from her coma, she learned she would never see or smell again.
Blind and in recovery, Chrissy proved to be a strong fighter. She learned to read Braille. She learned to read Braille and use a cane. She met her new boyfriend in a school for blind students. They got pregnant and welcomed a son in 2009.
By this point, 11 years had passed since the horrible accident. Chrissy hid her facial injuries with a black sleeping mask but longed to have a face for her son to see.
A group of doctors decided to gift Chrissy with a prosthetic face. They used photographs of her from before the accident to create a realistic plastic mold of her adult features. Her new prosthetic even came with a full face of makeup!
