TerraCycle is on one important mission to make the impossible possible.
The organization is finding ways to recycle and upcycle things that typically aren't considered recyclable or possible to upcycle. What they hope to do is eliminate the idea of waste.
For the scientists and innovators at TerraCycle, anything we throw away can actually be reused — even cigarette butts.
In this project or "Brigade," as they call them, they decided to recycle cigarette butts. What they did was place tiny bins that read "Cigarette Butt Recycling," in high-traffic areas.
What they saw was a decrease in cigarette butt littering and the opportunity to transform this previously non-recyclable item.
Upcycling and recycling are essential to creating a sustainable environment. Plus, you can make some really cool stuff. Take one look at this tire converted into an ottoman and tell me there's no use for that old junk you've got lying around.
TerraCycle uses the help of real people. All you have to do is send them your waste and in exchange you receive points. With the points you can get free gifts or use them to help out another charitable organization.
So how does a bucket of cigarettes become a fully functional park bench?
