If you were alive in 1964, you were one of the lucky individuals who experienced firsthand all the excitement of pop music's British Invasion. There was no escaping the screaming fans who followed bands like Herman's Hermits, the Animals, and of course, the Beatles. While they prepared to debut their first theatrical film, A Hard Day's Night, that same year, the Fab Four stretched their acting muscles with several promotional appearances.
Known for their quick wit and humorous answers during press events, they took the chance to show off their comedy skills with this hilarious performance from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Taking the short interlude scene, Paul McCartney plays Pyramus, John Lennon does his best as "beauteous" Thisbe, George Harrison takes his place as the Moon, and Ringo "roars" as the Lion. It's quite a different look than the still clean-cut, mop-topped crooners in suits and ties that we're used to seeing on them at the time. They take to their roles with that perfect Beatle charm, especially Lennon's not-so-feminine portrayal of the leading lady.
A group of hecklers in the crowd rounds out the rest of the characters, though it doesn't seem the actual audience members are in on the fact that their yelling is all a part of the play. The passionate fans tug at one's hair when he shouts his rehearsed jabs at the Liverpool boys! But it's all good fun and a silly look back at pop culture way back when.
