Caleb Young was living in New York City as a twenty-something in the aftermath of 9/11 when his life began to fall apart at the seams. So, he decided to move down to Florida and back into his childhood home with his aging mother. Little did he know, a newspaper ad was about to drastically change his life. Caleb's mom found an ad calling for dance instructors, no experience necessary. Now, over 10 years later, Caleb owns a dance studio and is known as "The Widow Whisperer."
Absolutely Ballroom specializes in providing women over the age of 50 — many who are widows — with a sense of closeness and intimacy they haven't felt in a very long time. These are women who have lost their sense of identity through old age and the painful experience of losing their spouses. "I thought that I could never dance with another man," one of Caleb's clients says with tears in her eyes. But through the dance lessons, these women are able to feel companionship, femininity, and even their own sensuality. It gives them a whole new meaning — for example, one of the women relishes in the opportunity to design and sew her own ballroom dresses in preparation for her recitals.
"I think the reason I connect so well with these ladies is that I treat them like people," Caleb says. "The majority of it is creating their own identity — not as a wife, grandmother or a great-grandmother. Just being who they are."
