Noreen Smith has been suffering from the debilitating symptoms of essential tremors since she was just 33 years old.
Essential tremors make it almost impossible for those affected to live their lives uninhibited. The condition causes the person to uncontrollably shake, usually in his or her hands. This makes doing even the simplest daily tasks difficult and, frankly, infuriating.
For Smith, though, this frustrating existence has finally come to an end. At 76 years old, she can finally sign her own name again without any trouble. This is all thanks to a noninvasive brain surgery that may change the entire future of operating on the human brain.
Watching Smith's face light up after surgery is enough to make you a bit misty-eyed. Her golden years are sure to be her best yet.
This is what Smith's signature has looked like for a huge portion of her life: a jumble a of jagged edges. It's essentially illegible.
However, this is what her signature looks like after she came out of her surgery. For the first time in years, she's going to be able to do things we take for granted, like signing a 50th anniversary card for her husband later this year.
The look of sheer joy on her face after writing her own name is one of many more to come as she rediscovers what it's like to have control over her own two hands.
This surgery doesn't even require the use of a scalpel or a drill… It doesn't even require opening up the skull of the patient. Instead, it uses MRI images to see where to guide ultrasound waves into the area of the brain where the cells that cause the tremors live. The sound waves destroy the bad cells, and the patient is left with no holes in his or her skull.
Thanks to this incredible technology, Noreen will never have to worry about spilling her meals onto the floor in public again.
So many people's lives will be made better with this advancement. Noreen Smith's going to live out the rest of her life with much more agency than she's had for decades.
