Teen Checks On Friend After Seeing Him Gasping For Breath, Then Hears Loud Thump Behind Him

On May 29, 2016, Charlottesville High School sophomores Trevon Jackson, AJ Stouffer, and Jerry Harris were on their way to play some basketball.

The three friends were absolutely inseparable, on and off the court. Basketball was one of their uniting interests.

Unfortunately, on that day, a game of the sport they loved nearly became a nightmare.

"I texted Jerry, went over to his house and picked him up, then came over to the armory and started playing basketball," said AJ, recalling the day.

The three friends arrived at the gym and started their game, when AJ suddenly noticed that Jerry wasn't playing.

AJ was then shocked to see Jerry bent over with his hands on his knees, especially considering that Jerry was a great athlete. How was he so winded already?

"We were running back down the court and his hands were on his knees," AJ said. "I was like, Jerry, are you good? I turned back around and then I just heard a big thump on the ground."

Jerry had collapsed and was rapidly losing consciousness.

AJ quickly called gym staff over so they could contact 911, and that's when Trevon leapt into action. He implemented the CPR training he had learned in middle school.

Because of his quick-thinking and heroics, he was able to keep Jerry alive until the paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that the boys' actions likely saved Jerry's life.

Jerry is OK, but is now using a pacemaker due to a heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He has also decided that perhaps golf, a less strenuous sport, might be better for him moving forward.
