His Daughter Died In The 1870s. What He Built In Her Memory? Amazing…

Grief is a powerful thing. And when the heart is hurting for someone or something we've lost, we're sometimes inspired to do things we'd otherwise never dream of.

But what this father did for his daughter over 100 years ago is truly shocking.

In Dunedin, New Zealand — sometime in the 1870's — John Cargill, son of Captain William Cargill, lost his youngest daughter to a rip tide. So overwhelmed by the grief of her loss, John feared falling into a depression from which he'd he'd never recover. He decided he would keep himself busy with a time-consuming project, something that would honor his daughter and bring beauty to his pain.

So, he began to dig.

After centuries of pounding from salty winds and powerful waves, Dunedin was framed by high sandstone cliffs, arches, and headlands. And it was here that John began to tunnel.

The result was Tunnel Beach, and it is simply stunning.

Now, from the depths of John's despair, travelers from all around come to marvel at his gorgeous discovery. From something tragic came something truly beautiful!

It's about 72 steps to the bottom. See the texture of the walls? You can tell it was hand-carved.
