Strange Adult Twins Keep Showing Up At NYC Playgrounds And Asking To Braid Kids’ Hair

In today’s world, there’s a lot that parents have to worry about when it comes to their children’s safety and well-being, so it comes at no surprise that many of them are on edge most of the time. And it also comes at no surprise that many Upper East Side parents in New York are highly concerned and alert by a pair of grown women who spend a lot of their time at the John Jay Park playground, even though they have no kids of their own.

Gabriela and Mihaela Modorcea, also known as the Indiggo Twins, who are 40 years old, spend a lot of their time at the playground interacting with children and asking questions. Many of the parents and caretakers are not fond of their presence, and have pushed for higher security at the park.

“This is my daughter’s playground,” 35-year-old Paulina, a mother of four, shared with the New York Post. "I don’t want adults around children.” And she’s not the only one. Photos of the twins have been posted in online parenting groups, telling other caretakers to be aware of them hanging around the park.

When Paulina saw the twins at the park, she immediately called the police. “I don’t know why they’re not doing something better with their lives instead of hanging out at a playground,” she said. “You have to draw the line.”

After a handful of parents voiced their concerns to the Community Board 5, the Parks Department put up a sign at the entrance of the playground stating “No adults except in the company of a child.” But the twins have still continued to show up at the park.

Up to this point, though, the Department hasn’t been notified of any illegal activity involving the twins. One on account, a caretaker recalled one twin wanting to braid a child’s hair and then photograph the child. Another caretaker recalled feeling uncomfortable when the twins asked the name and age of the babies she was looking after.

“It’s really scary,” the nanny of the child whose hair they wanted to braid told New York Post. “Maybe she wants to do something else.”

In one Facebook mom group, a mother wrote, “If you’re not with kids, stay out of the playground.”

The twins believe they’re being unfairly villainized. “We’ve lived here for 16 years,” Gabriela expressed. “For 16 years we’ve gone to John Jay. It’s the closest to us. It’s a completely false alarm.” They shared that they came to the US from Transylvania, Romania, in 2006 to pursue music and theater.

In 2008, they appeared on America's Got Talent. In 2009, they were featured in the New York Post about keeping fit. In 2011, they were photographed kissing Robert De Niro at a Vanity Fair party and one of their songs was sampled on Jay-Z’s Watch the Throne album. In 2017, they performed a song from their Off-Broadway play Wicked Clone on Good Day New York. They say all they are wanting to do is spread light and love.

“The way we look [in the parenting group] — we look like criminals. Hardcore criminals. My weapon is love,” Gabriela said. “We’re Christians, we’re all about promoting love and light.” “It’s a completely false alarm. It’s the opposite,” Mihaela added. “We love children beyond belief. Once they have spirituality and love is blooming inside their heart, they will know how to distinguish who is someone who will harm your child and who is filled with love,” she said. “It’s challenging, weird times where people are overly crazy.”
