Catherine Monson is the CEO of Fastsigns, a company that makes signs and logos for other corporations. During her appearance on Undercover Boss in 2013, the blonde businesswoman disguised herself as a raven-haired, tattooed, punk rocker.
With her new look, she was able to talk to employees without them ever guessing she was the big boss. Catherine met a graphic designer named Gary. When he told her his story, she was stunned.
Gary confessed that he never thought he would be a graphic designer. He grew up in an area where everyone was in a gang, so he assumed he had to be in one, too. By the time he was 19 he already had two strikes against him. As he awaited a hearing in court, he looked back at his mother crying and his newborn daughter. That's when he felt like a failure.
In that moment he prayed to God hoping for a miracle that would allow him to turn his life around. That day, the judge dismissed his case. Years later, Gary has devoted himself to helping others turn a new leaf and to helping his church, though it hasn't been easy. He commutes two and a half hours to church, his family was being evicted that very day, and even his church was near closure.
Catherine was blown away by Gary's journey and resilience, believing he reminded her of her brother. When she revealed her identity to him, she left the father in tears.
The CEO donated $15,000 to Gary's church, bought him a brand-new car, gave his family $50,000 for a new home, and offered him job training that could lead to a promotion.
Gary said all of his prayers were answered in a single day; he couldn't believe it was happening to him. Catherine believes he is an inspiration. Where you come from doesn't define where you are going, and Gary proved that in spades.
