Claudette Colbert is among the greatest American film actors of classic Hollywood cinema. While she got her start on Broadway, she later used her incredible range to work on many successful films. She could do anything from screwball comedy to melodrama. But when she went on this show, she had a whole new challenge.
What's My Line was a popular show back in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, where contestants would come on the show and try to trick the celebrity panel about what their jobs were. At the end of the show, though, a celebrity guest would take the podium and try to fool the panel into thinking they're someone else.
When Claudette Colbert came onto the show as the celebrity guests in 1959, she and the other panelists had a very hilarious speed bump to overcome. The speed bump's name was Groucho Marx.
Marx, a legendary comedian of that time period, used his quick wit, totally wacky physical comedy, and distinctive appearance to become one of the most iconic entertainers of the 20th century. In this episode of What's My Line, he totally derails the whole show… but it's anything but a disaster.
No matter what this man did, it was always such a delight to watch him. And it was the fact that he didn't play by the rules that made America fall in love with him in the first place!
