There's an old proverb that says something along the lines of, "Cats are to boxes as white is to rice." Or something to that effect.
It's no secret that our cats love their cardboard cubes (often more so than the nice toys we buy for them, much to our chagrin). But have you ever wondered specifically, for what reason, they enjoy them so much? If you have, you apparently aren't alone. The nice folks over at Animalist, in collaboration with YouTube kitties Cole and Marmalade, have gifted us with some probable evidence for why our furry friends are so stoked about cardboard. (Spoiler alert: it's not because they're crazy.)
Animalist suggests that cats love boxes for a number of reasons, perhaps the most likely of which is that boxes provide them a space of both "security and comfort." Since they can't be approached from any side, they feel more secure and protected. "They're kind of like security blankets for cats," explains the video. "Plus," they add, "they're made out of paper, which is made from wood, which comes from trees, which smell like the forest." (That may be a bit of a stretch, but there's undoubtedly some truth to at least part of it.)
