Grandmother Left Permanently Disfigured After Hospital Allegedly Mistook Her For Another Patient

A grandmother in Melbourne, Australia says she was left permanently disfigured after a local hospital performed the wrong surgical procedure on her. She didn’t know how wrong it was until she woke up to discover that her originally scheduled surgery had gone unresolved and she found physical evidence of a procedure she was not scheduled to have.

According to Nine.com.au, Debra Buchanan has expected a routine procedure to have a cancerous skin tag removed. Instead, she was mistaken for another patient with the same name, but different spelling. And, according to Buchanan, she was not asked her last name, so she trusted the medical professionals to operate on her in the way she had expected. That was reportedly not the case.

The woman is taking legal action against the hospital.

Buchanan explained to Nine that she went to the Sunshine Hospital in Melbourne for her surgery and was called from the waiting room by her first name. She explained there was another woman in the same waiting room, presumably for the procedure that was reportedly done to her instead. But the medical personnel called her back despite the same first names.

“They called ‘Deborah’ and I said ‘did you mean Buchanan?’ and they said ‘oh yes, you’ll do’ and the woman next to me said ‘I’m Deborah’ and they said ‘oh no, we’ve got the right one’,” Buchanan said.

She revealed that the surgery given to her instead of the skin tag removal was the removal of a large part of her external genitalia. A junior surgeon explained to her afterward that they did a “horseshoe shape” which they “stitched around” for the removal procedure that Buchanan did not visit the hospital for.

“I stood up, walked over to the bathroom door and I just got in the bathroom door and I haemorrhaged everywhere,” she added.

People have questions about the actual procedure the woman said she had done on her genitalia.

In comments under a TikTok news video from Nine about what happened, users shared questions about the unnamed external genitalia procedure that Buchanan says happened to her without her prior knowledge.

“Perineoplasty or pelvic organ repair apparently causes significant bleeding after surgery,” one user commented.

According to the National Institutes of Health, perineoplasty refers to the narrowing and tightening of the perineum, the area between the anus and vagina.

Someone else wrote, “They removed a large portion of her Vulva. A catastrophic medical blunder.”

Buchanan did not publicly share further details of the painful procedure. However, one thing other people are sure of is the “payout” she is owed due to the major medical blunder. Users also pointed out how, in most hospital settings, nurses and doctors ask for a patient’s date of birth and last name numerous times before any procedure or even exam is performed.

She still had her cancerous legion when she left the hospital.

Because Buchanan has received no care afterward or even a solid explanation of what happened, she has taken legal action against the hospital. Erin Monsalve Fear, attorney, also spoke to Nine and shared her shock at what happened and at Buchanan not being “consented appropriately” for the surgery.

The cancerous skin tag was also not removed, so Buchanan left the hospital without having the cancerous legion taken off her body. According to ABC News & Headlines in Australia, the government is investigating what happened. For Buchanan, she continues to live in pain and discomfort.
