While beauty standards have greatly evolved over the years, there are certain looks that define past eras and speak to the cultures who followed them.
Nowadays, American beauty is often defined by what's found on the pages of a magazine. And it's not uncommon for women to be bullied for their weight or to undergo surgical procedures in order to live up to today's standards.
Yet, way before fashion magazines and scientific advancements, women were still held to certain standards.
The video below focuses primarily on the way in which makeup has transformed throughout history. It takes us through the dramatic look of the Ancient Egyptian woman, which included a colorful lip and a distinct hairdo. Then there's Ancient Greece, a time period where women were expected to wear subtle makeup and shape their eyebrows in a way that is much less acceptable today.
Some eras, including the Elizabethan and the pre-French revolution, also mimicked each other in terms of what was desired, even though they were hundreds of years apart.
And just wait till the 1:41 mark, where you'll see how much makeup a Japanese Geisha had to wear to look the part.
