School Says Girl’s Face Will ‘Scare The Kids.’ 10 Years Later, She Transforms

A North Texas family is praising the work of their doctor's 10-year devotion to give one little girl the smile she always wanted. Yi Ling required extensive surgery after being born with a cleft on her face that extended all the way to her brain, making her survival slim.

She pulled through, though growing up would be tough. “She couldn't go to school,” her mother, Aileen Chen, told WFAA. “The school would not accept her because of the way she looks… [She] scared other kids.”

Dallas surgeon Dr. Craig Hobar decided to help the family, though his task wouldn't be easy.

“She had four segments of two noses," Dr. Hobar said. "Her eye socket was pushed over. Her brain was out of her skull, down into the area where her nose should've been.”

Yi Ling underwent several reconstructive surgeries from age 6 to 16. Now, her transformation is finally over.

Due to Hobar's endless work and kindness, Yi Ling is completely changed. The facial surgeries were a success; she is already reaping their benefits.

“Before I met her, I didn’t know kids like this can be healed,” Chen said. “With her new look, she's going to have a lot of friends and she's going to be successful in whatever she [wants].”
