Have you ever seen an animal that you just…couldn't figure out? The potoo is definitely one of those creatures.
You probably won't find this weird little guy at your local zoo, nor on your walk down a nearby nature trail — and it certainly won't be made into a large, cuddly toy any time soon! Typically found in Central and South America, this nocturnal insectivore spends most of its time perched atop tree stumps, eyes closed, completely camouflaged. Because of its bizarre features, one researcher has referred to the potoo as "little more than a flying mouth and eyes."
The potoo, if you can believe it, is a bird. They're closely related to frogmouths, which, as you could probably guess, also look a bit like feathered aliens.
According to local legend, the potoo is a mournful spirit in love with, but separate from, the moon. On moonlit nights, the calls of potoos tend to be more audible.
What do you think of this strange animal? Personally, I think it's kind of cute!
