Today's kids are more aware of the many issues plaguing our planet than ever before. Thankfully, they are also some of the most eager to get involved and make a difference. Kids of all ages can learn about green living and how to make choices that are good for the environment. All they need is a little guidance from a loved one to get started.
LittleThings spoke with sustainability expert Ashley Renne — host of Ashley Renne on Smart. Healthy. Green. Living — about introducing easy methods of sustainability that your whole family can be involved in.
"Being stuck at home has opened the eyes of many to how much unnecessary plastic we use in our day-to-day lives," Ashley noted.
Here are some of her awesome ideas for getting your own family living a little greener with zero-waste solutions.
Switch to Reusable Straws
A lot of straws get used in a household with kids, so it seems like one of the best places to get started reducing the waste you create.
"Switching from plastic disposable straws to reusable ones for smoothies and other drinks is a terrific way to reduce excess waste and keep the oceans clean," Ashley explained.
"Some great options are silicone, which comes in different colors and is easy to clean, stainless steel, glass, or bamboo."
Stock Up on Non-Plastic Food Storage Bags
Whether you're using them for snacks for playdates, to store small toys, or for school lunches, you know plastic storage bags fly in most homes with kids. Make sure to talk to your kids all about the change when you start the switch!
"When it comes to packing your child's lunch, instead of using plastic single-use snack or sandwich bags, choose BPA-free, food-grade silicone bags," Ashley noted.
"They come in various designs and are a great option for kids who like to carry multiple snacks with them when they're on the go — while eliminating plastic waste."
Move Your Cleaning Solutions Into Glass Bottles
Having more glass around may not feel instinctual with a house full of kids, but cleaning supplies are an area you can easily make the change in, as the kids shouldn't be playing with them anyway. It's a simple switch that can make a big difference.
"Most liquid cleaning products are mainly composed of water, so pivoting to waterless cleaners can greatly reduce the carbon footprint associated with creating and distributing these products," Ashley explained.
"Employing a reusable glass bottle, just add a touch of concentrated cleaning solution, fill with your own tap water, and get cleaning."
Keep the Plastics Out of Your Shower
Bathroom products are another area where you can make a lot of changes. There are so many awesome zero-waste ways to get your shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
"Go plastic-free by using shampoo and conditioner bars and swatches in the shower. They’re easy-to-use, effective, and eliminate the need for traditional liquid shampoo/conditioner that come in plastic bottles," Ashley urged.
"They're available in plastic-free, zero-waste packaging."
Invest in Cloth Shopping Bags
In some states, plastic shopping bags have been removed from stores. Whether or not your state is on board, your household can be.
"Teach your children by showing them how to shop green!" Ashley suggested.
"Plastic shopping bags are on their way out, with many communities banning them. Instead of using store-supplied paper bags, why not use reusable, cloth shopping bags? Your kids can help pick ones out that have super-cute designs."
Don't Forget About Those Produce Bags
There's no need for your local store's plastic produce bags when you can easily buy or make your own.
"Instead of tossing fruits and veggies into a shopping cart or using rolls of those thin plastic bags, consider switching to organic produce bags, which keep produce sanitary and organized while eliminating plastic. Encourage your child to pick out their favorite fruits and use the fun produce bag for the trip back home," Ashley suggests.
Bake With Silicone Liners
If your family loves baking, switching to silicone baking mats and silicone cupcake liners will be a fun, easy switch.
"Swap out disposable paper cupcake liners for reusable silicone liners to save money and eliminate landfill waste," Ashley noted.
"These liners come in cute colors and designs that kids will love! They can also be used for making your favorite furry friend's 'Pupcakes.'"
