There are individuals out there who take in foster dogs for short periods of time. Most of the dogs go on to other families after their time with their foster families. What happens, though, when the foster family falls in love with their foster dog?
A dog named Brutus was surrendered to a shelter by his prior family. The family who left him included a message: “We’ve decided to surrender Brutus. His behavior is uncontrollable, and we do not feel safe in the house with him. We don’t take this decision lightly, but last night was awful and we cannot do this any longer.”
Getting a message like this with a dog, you would expect the worst. Lee Asher from The Asher House, a nonprofit sanctuary in Estacada, Oregon, came to the shelter to check out Brutus. When staff brought Brutus in to meet Lee, Brutus immediately ran up to him with his tail wagging.
The whole interaction between Lee and Brutus was nothing but friendliness. Lee rolled on the floor with Brutus, playing with him, and Brutus rewarded him with all the kisses and tail wags. The former owners even claimed that Brutus doesn’t like men, yet he was all over Lee instantly.
Lee brought some of his other dogs with him to introduce them to Brutus. He had to make sure that Brutus was able to be around other dogs, no matter what their size. He brought his dogs Bo, PomPoms, Penny, and Kai, mostly because they are the yappers of the family.

Kai was very standoffish and yappy as Brutus tried to sniff him, but his little snaps didn’t bother Brutus at all. Then Lee put all of his dogs and Brutus in one area, and they all got along, giving Lee the thumbs up to take Brutus home.
When they got in the car, Brutus kept giving Lee kisses from the back seat, which caused Lee to repeat numerous times, “I’m not keeping him. I’m not keeping him. I’m not keeping him.”
I have a strong feeling that Brutus is going to have a permanent family a lot sooner than he thought.
