While most kindergarten classes introduce children to animals like gerbils and goldfish, my kindergarten class was a little out there. Instead of hatching chicks in our classroom, we hatched emus.
Yes, emus. Like ostriches, the birds are huge. It might sound crazy, but hatching emus was very similar to hatching baby chickens: we kept them warm in an incubator, and then once they hatched, we cared for them like any other baby bird.
We kept them in our classroom until they were big enough to jump out of their pen, and then they went to live back on a bird sanctuary where they originally came from.
It turns out that emus are relatively friendly creatures. If you've never gotten a chance to see them, you should try!
They're also apparently a lot of fun to play with. If you learn anything from the video below, it should be that these giant birds are funny, playful creatures.
Watch as this little boy dances alongside some silly baby emus outside. It almost looks like they're having a dance-off!
Even when one of the emus runs head first into the little boy, it doesn't stop any of them from dancing and playing.
Who knows, maybe emus are about to replace dogs as man's best friend!
