A Soldier Trained This Dog To Save Lives. When This Hero Died, His Family Left Me In TEARS

In my eyes, everyone who enters the military is a hero. That's why it's so hard to find the words to comfort military family members who lost their hero in the line of duty.

Fallen soldiers like this Navy hero made the ultimate sacrifice to protect their country, and it can be beyond difficult for their loved ones to move on with their lives afterward.

Since U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Christopher Diaz was killed in Afghanistan on September 28, 2011, his family has been left heartbroken. However, just like in this fallen hero's tragic story, Diaz' death did not mean the end to his legacy, as he left behind someone very important to him not in the U.S., but in Afghanistan.

For the past several months, Diaz' family has been waiting to meet someone very special in their son's life. Dino, Diaz's military working dog who saved Diaz and other soldiers by discovering live bombs. Diaz's father Salvador asked the military if they could adopt the dog that their son, who was known as one of the best military police dog handlers in the Marine Corps, trained with during the mission that took his life.

Although the dog was initially considered too young to retire, their wish was granted under special circumstances to help the family grieve with their son's death by the Secretary of the Navy. According to the Diaz family, the dog reminds them of their hero Christopher in many ways.

Salvador Diaz told ABC, "We know that he's not going to replace Christopher, but what he will do is give us a little bit of what Christopher loved and that was the Marine Corps, that was Dino."
