I recently went on a date to the movie theater to see a new release that we'd heard a lot about. We were really excited for this movie and had been waiting for months to see it. Previously unbeknownst to us, the movie featured an adorable white maltese as a "supporting character." It kind of stole the show, and we joked that it resembled my date's mother's dog.
Unfortunately, we were not prepared for when the adorable pooch met an untimely end that neither of us saw coming. I won't tell you the movie because I don't want to spoil it for you, but I bet other dog lovers would appreciate a service that notifies them when there might be any violence towards our four-legged friends in films.
Well, now there is.
The website is succinctly and appropriately named "Does the Dog Die?" It categorizes movies with three distinct symbols: a smiling dog, a sad dog, and a crying dog.
The smiling dog notates that the no pets are hurt. The sad dog designates that there may be animal violence, the pet might be harmed, or at some point the pet appears dead. The crying dog symbols means that the movie will feature an animal that gets killed.
Though the title and images clearly emphasize dogs, the website discusses a variety of animals featured on film. This service will definitely help out any animal lovers out there who may have sensitive stomachs when it comes to these issues, and it allows for users to submit feedback as well.
The service also goes on to explain the nature of of the animal's death in the film. For example, an animal being cruelly murdered is very different than a movie such as Marley and Me, which features a dog that is surrounded by loved ones.
Next time you go to the movies, or before you rent one, check out this website so you don't find yourself unnecessarily surprised.
Please SHARE with the animal lovers in your life so they can also be aware!
Also, catch the opening sequence for one of my favorite films of all time, Old Yeller, though it's definitely rated with a "crying dog."

An example of the categorization of the films can be seen here.

The yellow, smiling dog icon indicates that no animals are harmed or killed over the course of the movie. Even a scary movie like "Alien" features no animal violence.

The brown, sad puppy icon indicates that an animal might get hurt over the film or possibly appears dead, such as in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The gray, crying dog icon indicates that a pet, or other animal, does get injured or possibly even dies at some point in the film. Often, the website will list the specifications of the scene so that audiences can decide for themselves whether or not they
