Sometimes the animals that have experienced the most damage can end up having the happiest ending.
Dogs and cats have endured starvation, abandonment, and abuse and have still survived to live happy lives with loving families.
But often it takes volunteers or kind strangers like this woman to step in and get an animal the help that it so desperately needs.
This was the case for the poor Duke, a dog that was written off as ill, chained to an old trailer outside of town, and left to die.
With no one to rescue him for 10 days, it is safe to say that Duke experienced, hunger, neglect, and some serious strife.
But thanks to a kind rescue group, he was saved and even got help for his mangled body.
Check down below to learn more about Duke's dark past and the people who brought him to a better life.

Poor Duke's previous owner claimed that he had a horrible disease.
So the dog was tied to a broken-down trailer outside of town and left completely on his own.

The only food that he received was from a few kind passersby.
But other than that, he was alone and starving in the elements for 10 days!

In addition to his malnourishment, his legs were broken and mangled from past abuse.
Given his condition, it looked like Duke was destined to die, chained up and all alone.

But one woman who lived nearby saw the dog and recognized that he was suffering and in dire need of some help.
So she called the Rudozem Street Dog Rescue, and the charity's cofounder Tony Rowles went out to investigate.

When he found Duke, the dog was shaking, terrified, and covered in flies.

But he still responded to Rowles' outstretched hand with a lick and a tail wag.

Since the group's shelter was full, Rowles took Duke home with him to meet his wife and other pets.
He had no discernible disease, but definitely showed signs of trauma. X-rays on his front feet revealed that they had been mangled by prior abuse.

His legs were put in splints to see if some of his hurt ligaments would heal.
After being assessed and dressed, Duke was starting to warm up to his new loving environment.

After months of surgeries, Duke's wounds finally healed and he was able to walk around on non-wobbly legs.
Then something else amazing happened — someone applied to adopt him!

After so much struggle and torture, Duke finally got the chance to heal, both inside and out.
Now he has beautiful feet, a loving home, and a happy ending!
