They say that some animals have the innate ability to detect natural disasters before they hit, but I was always skeptical until I saw how this dog reacted to an earthquake…before it even happened. Yellow Lab Sophie's owner said that the pooch was especially eager to go to work with her human one day. Once there, she was notably more rowdy than usual before finally settling down near the desk of one of her owner's coworkers, Chris. But soon, Sophie began to notice that something was off in the town of Eureka, CA. Suddenly, she took off running toward her owner's desk. And a few seconds later, everyone knew exactly why.
While small earthquakes are common in California, the one that struck that particular day was a magnitude 6.5: strong enough to knock out the electricity and send all the workers at the Times-Standard newspaper scurrying out of the building. I have no idea how Sophie knew what was about to happen, but poor Chris was really caught by surprise. His reaction reminded me a lot of how these newscasters acted when an earthquake rattled their studio!
Thankfully, everyone made it safely out of the shaking building, and the ever-loyal Sophie even stayed by her owner's side the entire time to make sure they got out together. I have no idea how she knew about the impending earthquake, but I bet her owner feels a lot safer knowing this predictive pup can sense such incredible seismic events.
