As someone who can barely walk past a dog without cooing and asking if I can pet him or her, it's unfathomable for me to think about abandoning one.
However, as we see time and time again, millions of animals are neglected and taken to shelters every year, according to the ASPCA.
Luckily, adoptions are on the rise, and plenty of furry friends are welcomed with open arms by loving families every day.
The future may never be brighter for rescue animals, but that doesn't make it any less heartbreaking to see a dog suffering.
Sadly, many companion animals still have to be euthanized every year because shelters can't afford to keep them or pay for their medical expenses.
One dog who could have suffered a very different fate is Wanda, who was found on the brink of death after being dumped over a fence and left there.

Wanda was found after being dumped in a garden and was in a very dire state.
Her eyes were filled with pus, she had a nasty case of mange, and she had just given birth to puppies who were not found at the scene.
Luckily, Wanda was discovered just in time and was taken to the local animal shelter in Walsoken, England, where she was found.
You don't need to be a vet to see that Wanda was in an extremely serious condition and needed some serious medical care.
As any pet owner knows, medical treatments are far from free, and Wanda needed quite a few to get back on her feet — literally.
To help give Wanda the best chance, her rescuers Shelly Ridgan and Joel Clyne set up a GoFundMe page fittingly called, "Help Wanda."
Not surprisingly, anyone who saw Wanda immediately wanted to indeed "Help Wanda."
The page had a goal amount of £3,000, and the donations came pouring in even well after the number was reached.
Wanda needed many rounds of medicine for mange, her eyes, ears, and a drip for three days straight at first.
Wanda slowly recovered and everyone around her was amazed to see what was the "worst case in 25 years" become a happy, healthy dog.
As of today, Wanda's GoFundMe raised £8,000 and plenty of offers for adoption.
Wanda never parted with her foster family, and is enjoying life today as the dog she always should have been.
Wanda's GoFundMe page reads,
Just for all you wonderful people. This was taken today. Wanda is doing really well. 12 days on, we cant believe how much she has improved. She has another vet visit this week for her weekly injections for her mange and still has eye drops daily. Once she has had 4 mange treatments and is all clear, we can look closely at her eye and ear treatments and anything else that needs attention.
