There are dog people. There are cat people. And there are people who defy categorization — and, unfortunately, some of these people abuse animals.
Yet, there are also people on the flip-side of the spectrum who put the word human into humanity with their tireless efforts to aid animals in need.
Wilson Coutinho Martins of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil is a man who has dedicated his life to saving animals in dire straights. He recently came upon a dog whose need for rescue was so graphic and dire, that we at LittleThings have chosen not to show you every image from this particular rescue.
We have seen hundreds of dogs in desperate need of rescue, but this was by far the worst case we have ever witnessed. We have excluded those photos and censored others so that you can choose for yourself whether or not to view the content. We include them only so you can see how truly miraculous this rescue was.
Though this tale is heartbreaking, we feel it’s important to bring you stories like this in order to draw attention to this devastating problem and to inspire more people to be everyday heroes just like this very noble man…

Wilson found this dog lying helplessly in a field on the brink of death. The dog was in immense pain and its wounds were so severe that most people would opt to put the dog out of its misery. We have censored this image, but you can click the photo below to see the severity of the damage for yourself.
He instantly ripped off his shirt in order to dress the poor dog’s horrifying wounds. If he hadn’t made this life-saving decision, the dog may have died on site.
Wilson, who has some veterinary training, tended to the dog immediately.
Yet, he couldn’t handle the severity of the injuries by himself, so the dog was rushed to an animal hospital where a team of animal health professionals could tend to the poor dog.
With the help of a doctor and this dog’s unwavering spirit, he survived.
After some time, the brave dog was beginning to heal, although the harshness of his abuse is still very much apparent.
Yet, after some more time, he slowly began to grow his hair back, and the dog began to grow more and more comfortable around humans.
Now, it's hard to believe this gorgeous dog was once the one that Wilson found bloody in a field. Where many people would have given up on this dog, Wilson took the time to make sure he could survive.
This beautiful boy is now happy and healthy, all thanks to Wilson's efforts — but this isn't even the first time Wilson has come to the rescue of a dog in desperate need.
Prior to rescuing this dog, Wilson once found another dog on the brink of death. Without Wilson's help, this dog also would not have survived.
He stumbled upon a pit bull that had found shelter in a pile of filthy garbage...

Although the dog was petrified, Wilson was eventually able to lure the poor pup from his shelter.
The pit bull was so starved that Wilson could easily lift his fragile, skeletal body.
Not only was he severely underweight, he also had a shocking injury. Be forewarned, it is very graphic.
The dog, who weighed only 28 pounds, was rushed to the hospital.
The bone in his rear was exposed, and he could barely walk from the pain. If he was not found, he would have died from infection and blood loss.
Wilson took him home and tended to him.
The pit bull also needed several blood transfusions, antibiotics, and regular re-bandaging.
Yet, a month later, he was looking much better.
Not to mention healthier. He put on some much-needed weight.
He even got a proper name: Davi.
A year after he was found, he is now a happy, healthy dog that is full of life.
His body now looks healthy and he’s beaming with joy.
It's a beautiful turnaround for one lucky dog.
And to think all of his newfound happiness is due to the initial act of just one man.
