Dogs are very social animals, and if they had it their way, they'd be by our sides 24/7. But with bills to pay and families to feed, staying at home with our furry friends isn't often a possibility.

It's fun to think that while we're gone, our dogs are enjoying some mischievous alone time, but the reality is, they're probably suffering from some degree of separation anxiety.

Separation anxiety can present itself in many forms: Whining or barking, chewed up beds or pillows, or indoor potty breaks. Though these behaviors might be irksome, they're your dog's way of expressing his or her strong feelings.

So when you have no choice but to leave your sweet pooch alone for extended periods of time, what can you do to ease their anxiety?

You can start by taking them on a nice walk before you leave for the day. A visit to the park or a rigorous game of fetch will not only tucker them out, it will level out their brain chemistry; just like humans, dogs can exercise through their emotions.

You can also hire someone to walk your dog during the day. It doesn't have to be a professional dog walker; you could make special arrangements with a trusty next-door neighbor. Just be sure to offer a pet-related favor in return.

Or, if your workplace is close enough, you could stop by the house for a quick walk during your lunch break. That would be nice for both you and your pet.


Also, be sure to provide ample toys so your dog can expel some energy. And, though they may be tempting, try to avoid toys with treats in them; once the dog eats the treats — which could be within minutes — they'll grow bored again, and their eyes might fall upon the furniture or your favorite pair of shoes.
