When it comes to remembering the true "reason for the season," nothing is more effective than the humble Nativity scene.
Whether it's a large Nativity — like those found outside of churches — or simple figurines on the mantel, this holy scene is one that Christmas would be empty without.
However, since 2008 or 2009, one very special Nativity scene has been circulating on the Internet — and it's all because of what was found sleeping with little baby Jesus…
As the story goes, a stray puppy was seeking shelter in the town — when he spotted the tiny manger. Exhausted and without a home, he curled up against the holy infant and fell asleep.
Photos snapped of that memorable sight have since floated around online for years — reminding people of the true spirit of Christmas, and touching every heart along the way.
Though few details are known about this touching story, or what became of this little pup, one thing is clear: when we're in need, we can always count on one set of arms to protect us…

Though few details are known about these incredible photos, this story has been circulating online since 2008 or 2009.
According to the accounts, residents of Criciuma — a town in Santa Catarin, Brazil — were shocked when they happened upon their local Nativity scene.
Inside baby Jesus' manger was something they never expected to see…

It was a small stray puppy, curled up against the figure of the holy infant, sleeping peacefully.

The dog was a German shepherd — which, given Jesus' title as the "Good Shepherd," was quite stunning to onlookers!

Though it's assumed someone took in this adorable little pup, these photos serve as a stark reminder that countless animals will be without homes this winter.
In the U.S., around 6 million homeless cats and dogs enter a shelter each year, leaving millions of animals out in the cold come winter, searching for food and warmth.

Since Christmas is a time of compassion, love, and kindness, it's important to remember all our furry friends this winter.
After all, as that little infant in the manger taught us, we must love one another — all year round!
