When we watch or read the news, we often expect to hear more bleak stories about death and destruction, either by the hands of men or by a natural disaster.
This morning's news was no different, with the report of a massive 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck central Italy.
The quake is responsible for destroying many towns, including Amatrice and Accumoli, almost completely reducing them to piles of stone and cement.
As a result, dozens of people have lost their lives. The death toll is high, and still rising. Many others will not sleep in their homes tonight.
Rescue efforts are underway, and amidst the chaos and disaster are faint glimmers of hope: maybe it's when a family member believed to be dead is found alive. Or maybe it's when people come together to help sift through the wreckage to salvage some priceless artifacts.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake has completely destroyed several towns and areas of central Italy.
In the hours after the quake, citizens and rescue crews have tirelessly searched for surviving citizens who may be stuck under the rubble.
Unfortunately, the death toll has reached almost 80 people, and is rising as the minutes go by.
The destruction comes at the heels of Vesuvius Day in Italy, on August 24. This was the day the active volcano erupted in 79 AD, famously covering towns like Pompeii and Herculaneum with toxic ash.
But luckily, rescuers are making miraculous saves of all kinds — just like this lucky pup that was pulled from under tons of stone and cement, and appears to be completely safe and sound!
