It almost sounds like something from a zombie movie or a Stephen King novel: "Dog is buried alive, but climbs its way out of the grave."
It sounds terrifying, but we can assure you that this dog we're speaking of, Theia, is as cuddly, friendly, and loyal as any dog you'd want to meet.
I'll never understand how or why people can be cruel to animals, but I take solace in stories where the animal bounces back and does better than before, like these puppies who were abandoned in the snow but eventually found rescue and their forever homes.
Theia, a bully mix, is just barely one year old, yet she's lived a life that could fill a book, and she's proven herself to be one the of the toughest pups around.
It all began about a month ago in Pullman, WA. Theia, a stray at the time, was walking along a road. As she decided to cross the road, she never saw the car coming…
It is believed by attending veterinarians that she had been hit by a car and was in severe pain — though she was not dead.
In addition to apparent wounds from the car, there were also signs that the dog had been hammered on the head.
Veterinarians believe that the person who committed this cruel act were acting with good intentions, they likely believed the dog could not survive and were hoping to put an end to her pain following the accident. They also took time to bury her.
Amazingly — miraculously, even — Theia survived! She climbed her way out of her unjustly earned grave and wandered until she encountered some humans on a nearby farm.
Luckily, Theia received the medical attention that she so desperately needed, and veterinarians were able to save her life.
It's unclear to this day who was responsible for the terrible things that happened to Theia, but there's a bright side to the whole story.
Theia was also fortunate enough to fall into the hands of Sara Mellado, who has taken her in.
The trauma caused to Theia has resulted in difficulty breathing due to a caved-in sinus cavity.
Undeterred, Sara started a fundraising campaign to make sure that Theia has a lifetime with all the treatment she needs and deserves.
Amazingly, despite Theia's abuse, she remains sweet, affectionate, and loving to all humans she encounters.
Mellado says, "She's a true miracle dog and deserves a good life."
Theia's story is proof that there's hope available for every dog — even when people think the worst has happened.
