Golden retrievers one of the most popular dog breeds in America, sure. But how much do we actually know about these markedly friendly pups?
Animalist and Best Breed Ever bring us yet another fact-filled video about our favorite four-legged companions — and it's got some information that may surprise even the most avid golden enthusiasts. For instance, contrary to a rumor for which its origins are unclear, goldens are among the four smartest dog breeds (right up there with collies and German shepherds). They're a cross between English water spaniel and wavy-coated retriever, and their temperament is incredibly friendly (meaning they're not ideal as guard dogs). Both breeds have a playful and sweet demeanor, so its not difficult to understand why the golden retriever is such a kind and lovable pup.
And their loyalty and friendliness qualify them as great therapy animals. In fact, a while back we shared the story of one golden in particular who changed the life of a nearly immobile boy named Caleb and helped him recover to near full mobility — with nothing other than his presence, patience, and capacity for play. With all of this in mind, it's not difficult to understand why they're frequently the recipient of the "forever friend" title.
