A little dog ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time and nearly lost his life this week.
The family pup, named Gordo, was in critical condition after being hit by a stolen van during a high-speed 30-minute police chase through the streets of South Los Angeles. The driver of the stolen van were taken into police custody after they stopped the white Chevrolet Astro van, which they believe was stolen.
Gordo, a year-old Maltese mix, was located and rushed to City of Angels Veterinary Specialty Center in Culver City to receive emergency medical care. He sustained major injuries to his rear right leg and hip area and needed surgery. Gordo almost completely lost his hind leg, when doctors thought it needed to be amputated. Luckily, they were able to salvage his leg and the veterinarians believe he will survive.
Gordo's operation will run his family thousands of dollars, but since the story hit the news, people around the country have been sending in donations. The dog's owner says he's so grateful for the help and feels optimistic about the pup's recovery.
"In the long term, he hopefully will have a very good result," he told ABC News. "Running, jumping, playing, going wild."
