Having a pet means taking responsibility for the well-being and safety of that pet. Unfortunately, it's easy for some people to forget that dogs, cats, and even fish are just like us — they feel joy and pain.
One Imgur user discovered that her niece was not being very responsible for the goldfish she won at a fair. She was appalled that the fish had been left in a dirty tank for a year and a half. It got so filthy, and the water was so murky, you could barely see the little guy inside.
But when this woman did look inside, she was surprised to see that the little fish was still alive!
She then took it upon herself to rescue him from his conditions. But she had to be careful. A rapid change in his environment could have killed him, so she had to take her time in changing the water and the tank entirely.

Was given a fishy tank by my 16-year-old niece, a goldfish won at the state fair 1.5 years ago that she never really wanted… and just kept living. He is a champion, really.

His tank made me soo sad: no filtration, just aeration, the water was dense, but my little fishy was just chillen. Refilled the tank to the top with more clean water and set off to the aquarium store.

So according to the aquairum dude, taking the fish from bad water to fresh quick is how you get a dead fishy. Which is fine cuz my aim was to spoil, and I needed time to slowly buy supplies. After 2 weeks of slowly changing out his water with fresh I bought the big boy filter, filtered out his existing water for a couple days and displaced with his new tank water (10 gallon)

New tank starting to form, It sat unused for a bit while I got it settled and him acclimated, don’t die on me fishy!!

My fishy in his new home, I loves him <3 Been 2 days and no signs of the transition bothering him, soon he will get some fish buddies to hang with. The end.

Many other users saw the conditions the goldfish was living in and were appalled, but certainly glad that the pet survived!

Many even offered their tips on how to care for a fish like him.

Although this aunt likely gave her niece a stern talking to about responsibility, this fish beat the odds and got the happy ending he deserved!
