The story of a man, his dog, and their unshakeable bond is nothing new. In the ancient tale The Odyssey, Greek hero Odysseus returns home after 20 long years of war and travel. The first and only creature to recognize him? His dog Argos, who had been loyally awaiting his beloved master's return.
In the 21st century, the classic tale of a man and his dog is no less touching.
While serving as a U.S. Marine in Afghanistan, Jared Heine made many friends — but none as treasured as Spike, his bomb-sniffing combat dog. Jared and Spike worked, slept, and ate together; they were inseparable. On their work together on the battlefield, Jared said, "We would clear the routes for the [Marine] patrols every day. We found a couple of IEDs, and we did have a couple of them go off on us. So, he's been through a lot, same as me."
But then, tragically, Jared and Spike were separated. For two years Jared had no way of knowing what became of his loyal friend and comrade — that is, until Jared's mom did a little research. What she found is sure to bring you to tears.
