Our men and women in uniform are charged with protecting us, and there's no greater example of this than active Marine Jaryd Horsley. Horsley was coming home from work when he made a terrible discovery.
There was a young, starving pit bull tied to a dumpster right outside his apartment in the Talmadge area of San Diego.
Like many of us, Horsley is a dog lover. Upon seeing the poor pup, leash wrapped so tightly around her neck that she couldn't even sit down, his heart broke.
"Waiting for the trash to come pick her up, that's what it seemed like. It's rough. Who would do this to an innocent puppy?" he told ABC 10 News.
He couldn't let this stand, so Horsley and his fiancée adopted the 8-month-old pit bull, Phoebe, and quickly took her to a vet to figure out what was so wrong that someone could just abandon her.
It was discovered that Phoebe, along with dealing with a bad skin infection, had a life-threatening heart murmur that, if left untreated, would give the pup just a year to live.
But that didn't deter Horsley from giving the pit bull a forever home. "I just want her to be happy, be comfortable and have a good life, no matter how long it is," he said.
You too can help give Phoebe a second chance by donating to her GoFundMe page.
