We don't deserve dogs. At least, that's what one very grateful dog and human mom is saying after her 8-year-old Boston terrier saved her baby's life.
Kelly Andrews took to Twitter to reveal the truly incredible thing her dog, Henry, did, which at first seemed confusing. Kelly wrote, "Last night the dog kept breaking into the nursery and waking the baby. She’s been sick, and I was getting so fed up with him."
Anyone who has ever had a sick baby can understand that. All you want your baby to do is keep sleeping so they can wake up feeling better. But thankfully, the dog's instincts wouldn't allow it. Turns out, there was a very good reason for that.
"Until she stopped breathing," Kelly continued, sharing how her 9-month-old baby started turning blue.
"We spent the night in the hospital," she shared. "I don’t know what would have happened if he hadn’t woken her. We don’t deserve dogs."
Kelly told Good Morning America about what happened, saying the dog definitely was alerting them to something that was out of the norm. "He was head-butting the door open and going into her room and standing there," Kelly said. "And every time I shooed him away, he would go back in as soon as my back was turned."
"She wasn't clearing her airway," Kelly said. "She started to turn blue and go rigid and she just really couldn't she couldn't get air, couldn't get any oxygen."
When Kelly and her husband realized their baby couldn't breathe, they rushed her to the hospital. Doctors were able to clear the baby's airways. But if it hadn't been for their old pup, whom they now hail as a hero, the story might've ended very differently.
The family is obviously incredibly grateful for their amazing dog. "We're definitely spoiling the dog a little bit more," dad Jeff Dowling said. "He was allowed to sleep in bed with me last night and he's got a steak in his future."
Henry is definitely reaping the rewards of his heroic actions. Kelly says he's never done anything "quite so heroic" before this, but it's certainly something their family will always be eternally grateful for.
She's right about one thing: "We don't deserve dogs."
