When potential pet owners look to possible adoptions, most want an animal they can raise as their own — a puppy or a kitty. Elderly pets — pets who require less but give more — are typically overlooked by potential adopters, and that leaves a lot of pets without homes. Even the babies struggle to find their forever homes before they outgrow their infancy.
But that's where Chris and Mariesa Hughes come in. The husband and wife duo saw a need for a safe and loving space for elderly dogs to live out the remainder of their lives with proper care, and that's how they hatched the idea to found their nonprofit the Mr. Mo Project. The operation places dogs with their forever homes at no cost to the fosters for the duration of the dog's life — thereby alleviating any financial obstacles and ensuring that the dogs have all of the proper care they need.
Chris and Mariesa have a full house of rescues as well, and their nonprofit was named for one of their first senior pups Moses. Below, the couple share their memories of the dog who inspired a passion to save countless senior dogs who would've faced euthanization, but have since been placed with loving foster homes. The Mr. Mo Project is primarily funded by donations, and if you'd like to learn more about how to get involved, head over to their website.
