This DIY-er Built An Incredible Kayak For His Favorite Canine Companions

There's nothing better than having a canine companion constantly by your side.

Whether you're throwing your pup an epic pool party for all his friends or just spending some quality time relaxing with your favorite animal, it's always time well spent.

That's why when I saw what David Bahnson, a dog owner from Vermont, built for his two favorite pets, I was absolutely blown away!

A lover of kayaking and nature, Bahnson wanted to find a way to bring his dogs along on his favorite activity, so he created the cutest dog kayak I've ever seen.

"Our dogs have always loved to travel with us in cars, in my airplane, in boats," he told Huffpo UK. “Building a way for them to kayak with us just seemed like a logical choice, and the boats are fun to build anyway.”

Bahnson redesigned two of the baggage compartments as dog-friendly seats, so his pups Susie and Ginger could join him on the water. 'We've gone miles and miles paddling with our dogs,' Bahnson shared with the Dodo. 'They just really enjoy going places.'

The lightbulb went off for Bahnson after seeing how easily his first dog, Susie, could fit inside the baggage compartment of his kayak, which he built from a kit by Pygmy Boats. The addition of a ring, or 'coaming,' around the opening helped Susie stay cozy and dry as they kayaked through the water together.

It wasn't too long before Bahnson, his wife, and Susie were joined by another canine family member, Ginger. Not wanting to leave the new pup out during their epic kayaking trips, Bahnson modified the boat once again. 'When we got Ginger, I just put in another hole,' said Bahnson. 'It's like a triple kayak, only there isn't enough room for the paddlers to put their feet — but it's perfect for a dog.'

Of course, some puppy training was required to prevent possible capsizing, but Bahnson says the dogs were quick learners. He is also very careful never to paddle too far from shore — even though his dogs are strong swimmers — and the pups only go for a swim if told.

'We've seen other people kayaking with their dogs, but they usually have them in the cockpit with them. That's kind of awkward, so this just worked out better,' he said. 'They each have a little dedicated space, and they just sit and enjoy the ride.' Banh
