Man Is Taking His Dying Dog On A “Bucket List” Trip Across The Country

The average pet owner would probably like to think they’d go above and beyond for his or her companion, but Thomas Neil Rodriguez is raising the bar for the animal lovers among us.

Rodriguez is the proud owner of a 15-year-old Labrador-pit bull mix rescue named Poh, who is currently suffering renal failure, meaning his kidneys are giving out. With Poh given a few months left to live, Rodriguez has decided to embark on a doggie “bucket list” with his four-legged pal.

Currently living in New Jersey with his fiancée Yuko Ogino, People reports, Rodriguez had always wanted to bring Poh along for during his world travels, and now seemed as opportune a time as any. Their veterinarian had told them they may only have days, but Poh’s continued to hold out.

"I always wanted to bring Poh to the West Coast so he could swim in the Pacific Ocean," he tells People. "That turned into a seven-week trip. We ended up hitting 35 cities." And 12,000 miles, to boot.

When asked about how he’ll handle Poh’s passing after his departure to doggy heaven, Rodriguez tells PIX 11, “Basically there’s no way you can really prepare for it. Right now I’m just trying to enjoy my life with him as much as I can.”
