Only a few months ago, a sweet 2-year-old pit bull named Rosie was rescued from an abusive home and taken in by a foster family in New Orleans. But they discovered that she had cancer, a life-threatening form of lymphoma that couldn’t be cured by doctors in their area. That’s when a local nonprofit organization called Save-An-Angel decided to take the initiative. They raised enough funds in order to bring Rosie and her family to the Canadian border where she had a fighting chance at beating the disease.
Except the recommended treatment was normally reserved for humans with cancer, not dogs.
“What we were hoping for was that she would be cured of her lymphoma by this procedure," says Dr. Ed Sullivan, a veterinarian. "And if she is, that will start to open the door for other dogs — and for people — to have the same treatment."
Pit bull transformation stories are always so heartwarming to witness. Like Rosie, this abused pit bull and her mom made a wonderful recovery, and so did the gentle pup that was rescued after being chained up for far too long.
Rosie’s cancer is currently in remission, and things are certainly looking up as she proceeds with treatment. "With this exact treatment, this has never happened before," says Dr. Sullivan, and we’re so pleased that Rosie will be paving the way for others!
