If You See THIS In Your Dog’s Mouth, You Should Call Your Vet ASAP!

When you own a pet, it's important to always be aware of any unusual behaviors exhibited by our furry friends. They obviously can't directly tell us if something is wrong or if they're in pain, so it's up to us to be the best caretakers we possibly can. When it comes to assessing a sick dog, I know I've asked myself the big question more than once: "Should I bring her to the vet, or wait another day and see?"

Some behaviors are normal idiosyncrasies, while others are warning signs that could potentially be deadly. Smaller issues like unkept fur or a significant drop in energy can sometimes go unchecked even by the most vigilant owner — but recognizing these signs could save your pet's life.  In the video below, Dr. Adrianne Mulligan discusses how to care for a dog before calling the vet, and taking your dog's vital statistics. Here are some awesome tips:

  1. Take the dog's temperature. This can be done with either a rectal or ear thermometer. Though it's more uncomfortable, a rectal thermometer is more accurate. You may need someone else to assist you.

  2. Check the color and wetness of the dog's gums, along with the capillary reflexes on the gums. Different gum color and wetness indicate whether or not a dog may be ill.

  3. Check your dog's pulse by placing your hands on the side of the dog's chest and pressing your fingers against the ribs.
