Dog And Mom’s Lives Depend On 8-Year-Old Son When They Are Trapped In Icy Lake

It's the time of the year when keeping your pets on a leash can be the difference between life or death if you venture near frozen bodies of water.

Many dogs try to walk on the ice, not knowing that the surface is likely not solid enough to sustain their weight. They may chase other animals onto frozen lakes and rivers and fall through thin ice. By the time rescuers can get to them, it may be too late.

With this in mind, Cathy Medernach jumped into a canoe to get to her 11-year-old dog, which had chased after ducks and ran straight into the icy pond. Using an oar, Cathy tried to make her way toward the freezing, petrified pup.

That's when she became trapped too.

With only her 8-year-old son within earshot, she screamed for help. The boy came running and quickly dialed 911.

While sending a rescue crew, the dispatcher gave the boy directions to give his mother so she could be safe. In a recording of the 911 call, you can hear him yell at his mother to swim to shore.

Thankfully, both the dog and Cathy were saved in the nick of time. The mom is certainly now aware of what can happen with her dog on the loose!
