As soon as Dr. Ashley Magee saw the X-ray of a Great Dane that had just come in to Portland's DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital, she knew something was very wrong. There was an unidentifiable mass in his stomach, and it was causing the poor dog to vomit and act very sluggish.
Knowing she had to go in and take a better look, Dr. Magee put the dog under anesthesia and opened up his stomach.
What she saw completely shocked her!
Not one, not two, not even 10 – but 43 socks were sitting inside this pup's stomach!
According to Oregon Live, " During the nearly two-hour surgery, she must have thought she was working in a department store as she pulled out sock after sock after sock. In the end, Magee removed 43 1/2 socks. That 1/2 sock remains a mystery.
Harch said it's perhaps the strangest case in hospital history, and certainly the record set for the most socks eaten. The owners, she said, were unavailable for comment, and she couldn't release their names.
Earlier this year, DoveLewis officials learned of a contest sponsored by Veterinary Practice News, a magazine for vets. The publication announced a contest — ongoing for nearly a decade — "They Ate WHAT?" Vets were asked to submit an X-ray along with case details.
And, of course, DoveLewis knew what to submit. They learned they came in second place and won $500. The money will be placed in a fund to help low-income people pay for vet bills."
After she removed the socks, the dog felt much better, and has since gone on to be happy and healthy once again, presumably far away from any wayward footwear!
